UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
