The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
