In the extremely contested world of video games, it's common for new contenders to vanish as swiftly as they burst on to the landscape.
But this new installment is aiming to alter that.
Here comes the latest entry in a long-standing military shooter series often positioned as a more realistic answer to its main competitor.
This game has never quite managed to rival its best-known competitor in terms of units sold or user base, but there are signs the latest version could close the gap.
An early access session enabling players a chance to experience the game in recent months achieved milestones, and the buzz heading into its launch has been massive.
However the project is nevertheless a major venture for company Electronic Arts, which has allegedly allocated hundreds of millions of dollars developing it.
Reporters have spoken to a number of the creators to learn how they hope it will succeed.
Production Team and Company Partnership
Several studios were developing the title under the collaborative umbrella.
This includes long-time developer the original team, located in Sweden, LA's Motive team and Ripple Effect in North America.
Another, the UK studio, is based in the UK.
A key leader is the studio head of the pair of European developers, and explains to our team that, in terms of what it's delivering players, "the latest installment is probably unmatched."
Learning From Earlier Shortcomings
This title comes off the release of the futuristic the previous game, launched four years ago to a poor response it struggled to overcome.
"We most likely would find it impossible to make and develop this new game lacking the learnings we had in the previous title," Rebecka shares with our team.
One of those lessons was to get players participating early, and the team started invite-only community testing sessions in recent months.
This "reaction was explosively positive," says she.
Another absent element from the previous installment was a single-player campaign, which has been brought back this time around.
Criterion creative lead Fas Salim is the one in charge of "guaranteeing those missions are as entertaining and interesting as possible for the gamers."
Regardless of claims that the size of the title had challenged the different teams partnering globally to create the game, Fas is positive about the endeavor.
"Collaborating with different cultures, distinct backgrounds, it's a really fascinating atmosphere to be part of on a regular basis," he says.
"This whole method has been a fresh take but additionally very thrilling because we are collaborating with people from internationally."
Regarding the pressure on the crew, Fas says: "We experience stress but also it's exciting.
"It's a major project. It's arguably the largest that many of us have previously been involved in."
Young Talent Brings Innovative Perspective
This is definitely correct of at least one team member, lighting artist Vlad.
The 21-year-old produces the atmospheric effects that define the mood, style, and narrative of the story mode.
Vlad undertook an work placement at Criterion prior to securing a job at the company, and now operates on a part-time basis while finishing his visual effects studies at Bournemouth University.
Vlad explains he's a long-standing supporter of the Battlefield series, and remembers experiencing the previous game of the line at a buddy's place when he was younger.
Being on it currently, as his first professional role, "is hard to believe as actual."
"It's very amazing observing the promotion everywhere," he shares.
"To know that I have added my own thing into the title is truly dreamlike."
