Larian Studios Details Its Implementation of AI Tools for New Divinity Game

The developer behind hit titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its next major project, creating a wave of excitement within the player base. However, follow-up remarks from the company's lead designer have brought clarity to the narrative, focusing on the studio's philosophy toward AI tools.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new message, Larian's director outlined that the developer is using generative AI for particular ancillary tasks. These involve fleshing out presentation materials, creating rough concept art, and drafting draft dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke emphasized that the end content in the game will be created exclusively by real artists. "Our team is developing all the content in-house," he said.

We are constantly increasing our team of writers and are busily putting together narrative groups.

As visual development is being particularly mentioned — we currently have over twenty artistic staff and have job openings for additional artists.

Each initiative we do is incremental and designed to having people spend additional energy on the creative process.

Every machine learning application applied correctly is a boost to a creative team process, not a substitute for their craft.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The news of employing this technology initially generated unease among a segment of the community. In reply, Vincke issued further elaboration on public forums.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to gather inspiration, just like we use the internet and physical media," he stated. "During the initial ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then substitute with hand-crafted artwork."

He noted, "Larian brings on talent for their inherent skill, not for their ability to replicate what a algorithm proposes."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had previously detailed the studio's practical strategy to machine learning, defining its use into primary areas:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This encompasses refining animations, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like retargeting animations.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to rapidly prototype basic mock-ups of scenarios to validate concepts before expensive production.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how machine learning could in the future create innovative gameplay, particularly in simulating dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.

He clearly noted that core creative areas — including writing — are are in no way departments where the team is reducing artistic talent. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these very roles.

"Larian is neither shipping a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not planning on reducing teams to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
