Citizens have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.

The source said the morning session ended without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the talks are "tough and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Matters in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future governance of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere feels like home now and until each abducted person are released not a single person will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people congregated to express their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israelis prefer the war to conclude in return for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.

From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the urban center, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"As the night comes, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south, medics said.
