An Tale of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured I would book lodging after getting there, yet once I got there, a big convention was happening and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open around the clock. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend the evening in a place that stayed open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more individuals with such compassion.

I must have looked confused as a young woman noticed me wandering around the city center and wondered if everything was alright. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she offered I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I was able to use the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure for the evening.

Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman letting a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. At that time I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – but still incredibly thankful.

I never did study at ANU, and I lost touch with her again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of kindness. I hope the universe has repaid her good deed many times over. Our society requires more folks like that woman.
