Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
