A comprehensive search and rescue mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing sailing vessels transporting aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Search Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and search planes to locate the two vessels, which were transporting at least 9 sailors, according to a military release.

The boats had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to the Island

Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation endures multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative associated with the mission commented.

The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of donated goods to the country.

That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, drugs, infant formula, bikes and provisions.
